Frequently Asked Questions

  • Gender and sexuality expansive therapy recognizes gender and sexuality as a part of your identities, regardless of your sexual orientation and/or gender identity (or lack thereof). Regardless of what you come in to talk about, we keep in mind how gender and sexuality may impact you – even if it is not your focal point. We also provide a space to explore gender and sexuality for everyone, regardless of your sexual orientation or gender identity.

All of our clinicians work from anti-oppression, anti-racist, and intersectional foundations. We understand that we live in a white supremacist, capitalist society, where certain identities are valued over others and treated differently. We understand how these systems can impact every aspect of your life, well being, and mental health. We hold space for you to explore the impacts of these systems in your life, and we work together to figure out best ways to manage and navigate the symptoms that come from having marginalized identities that are not always respected or valued in our society.

We recognize that as a for-profit group practice, we are inherently a part of the white supremacist, capitalist systems (insurance, medical, increased operating costs causing increased rates, etc.). We strive to be as anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and intersectional as possible while working within this system by explaining as clearly as possible any systems you interact with within our practice and try to disrupt unhealthy power dynamics as much as possible within the therapeutic relationship.

  • We first schedule a phone consultation to see if we may want to work together. If we decide to move forward, we then pick a set time to meet for each week. The first 1-3 sessions are intake and diagnosis to get a better understanding of you and your history, and to provide diagnosis which is needed for billing purposes. After the intake session(s) you decide what you want to explore from session to session.

The first 1-3 sessions are also designed to assess fit for you and your therapist. If either you or your therapist feel that working together is not a good fit, you can be transferred to another clinician within Bloom Psychotherapy NYC depending on clinician availability, and fit on a case by case basis. We can also refer you out to another therapist/practice/clinic depending on your needs.

  • Individual sessions are 45 minutes.

If meeting with a child or adolescent for the first time, the first half of the 45-minute session is with parents/ guardians and the second half is with the child. Subsequent sessions are with the child alone for 45 minutes, with check-ins/collateral/family sessions with the parents and/or whole family as needed.

Family, Couples, and Intimate Relationship sessions are 60 minutes.

Groups are 60-90 minutes depending on the group.

Please make sure that your insurance allows for out-of-network benefits. When working with you out-of-network, you are responsible to submit claims to your insurance company. We support you with this by providing you a Superbill or statement to submit to your insurance company, who will then reimburse you. We request that you please pay us in full at the time of session.

If you cancel within less than 48 hours or do not show up to your appointment without notice, you are still required to pay the full cost of your session. We allow 2 late cancelled or no-show sessions with no charge per calendar year for illness or emergency only. If you do need to cancel or miss a session, regardless of the reason, you are still expected to reach out to your clinician and inform them as soon as possible.

Rescheduling sessions is at the discretion of your therapist. There will be times your therapist will not be able to reschedule due to their schedule, in which case you will have to pay for late cancelled sessions even if you intended to reschedule. Additionally, rescheduled sessions must fall within the same week as the cancelled session.

If your therapist cancels session there is no charge.
